Interestingly, as of January 17, 2026, 18 users have submitted a rating for this Ardnahoe on Whiskybase, with an average score of a pretty good 88.29. I'll bet anything: if we were talking about a Scotch whisky from the mainland, rather than an Islay distillery, we'd probably be somewhere around 84 or 85 points. And if we then moved the whole thing to Ireland, there might be a few bonus points for the well-intentioned attempt to create a peaty whisky, but with the suggestion that it could really use a few more years in the cask, we certainly wouldn't get much higher than 80 points – for an Irish whisky. He honestly deserved my 83 points.

Even before the first sip is taken, this whisky makes an impression. The beautiful golden-yellow colour radiates warmth, and the many tears slowly gliding down the glass immediately reveal a rich texture and a lovely viscosity. It promises much – and that promise is amply fulfilled. This whisky combines fruit, smoke, and spiciness in a particularly elegant way. The full texture, layered aromas, and long, complex finish make this a whisky not to be drunk in haste. Every sip reveals a new detail, ensuring the glass continues to surprise until the last drop. A whisky with class, balance, and a beautifully mature character.
Tried from a 2cl sample I normally hate PX casks for being too sweet and syrupy. But this is a dry one and I love it.
It has an oily viscosity and a fairly intense bouquet. I detect aromas of pleasant, maritime peat smoke, raisin syrup, plum wine, vanilla, crème brûlée, nuts, orange peel, smoked bacon, chocolate, and dried fruit. It's not particularly complex yet, of course. There's a good balance between sweetness and dryness on the palate. The alcohol is well integrated, and it has a substantial body.
Mixed 50:50 with the second bottling of Carad Ileach: 88 points.
One of my favourite distilleries, however my tastes are more for the strong peaty , bourbon cask renditions. I have tried the Bholsa cask and prefer it to this rendition. The PX casks are surprisingly less dominant than I imagined. Nose: Intense aromas of juicy raspberries, dark berries and juicy plums. stewed plums,. Palate: Ripe plums, figs, toffee, and dark chocolate blend with warming cinnamon, oak spices, and robust Islay peat. Texture is medium, slightly thin. Finish: Long and deeply warming. The lingering sweet dried fruits gradually give way to a delicate, elegant veil of maritime smoke. Not a standout whisky for me.
Ardnahoe pairs well with sherry casks, and this one is no exception. It reminds me of the best Islay malts with sherry maturation, mostly Caol Ila and tastes way above its age. A very good release, no doubts.
For me, not enough of the distillery character comes through.
Aromas of raspberries, gently cooked plums, candied orange, and maritime peat characterize the bouquet. On the palate, notes of sultanas, fully ripe figs, and cinnamon emerge, followed by a long, warming finish with a subtle smokiness.
Ardnahoe hits different this time. I got a sample of both, and this is the first one.
Peat and PX always works for me, very tasty whisky!
Mittellang. Etwas Minze blitzt zum Schluss auf. Sehr lecker!
